Project Management Institute (PMI), the world’s leading project management member association, celebrated the industry’s top research projects last night at its 2012 Research and Education Conference (University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland). The biennial international event, which brings together scholars, senior practitioners and students of project management, provides an opportunity for attendees to present and discuss new project management research findings and teaching methods.
This year’s awards recognize individuals who have produced particularly notable bodies of work in research and education. The awards and recipients include:
Project Management Journal® Paper of the Year Award
Authors Pauli Alin, DSc, John E. Taylor, PhD, and Riitta Smeds, DSc for their paper, "Knowledge Transformation in Project Networks: A Speech Act Level Cross-Boundary Analysis." The paper provides readers with an understanding of knowledge transformation processes and outcomes in project networks.
PMI Research Achievement Award
Dr. Brian Hobbs, for his contributions as one of the leading researchers in the field of project management globally. He has edited several special issues of the leading research journals and has published several books and papers about project management. He has also made substantial contributions to the development of the project management research community and developed the research program in project management at the University of Quebec in Montreal, where he and has supervises PhD students.
PMI Student Award
Henrik Wallstrom and Ylva Ridderheim, and co-authors Erik Påhlson, Erik Åkesson and Hanna Landgren for Motivational Triggers In Projects: A Comparative Study Of The Construction And Consultant Industry. This student paper distinguishes the primary sources of motivation in projects and amongst project members by comparing interview results from project members and managers in the construction and consulting fields.
Academic Member Advisory Group (MAG) 5-year Volunteer Service Recognition
Prof. Terry Williams, PhD, Dean of Hull University Business School (Hull, U.K.), for his volunteer service as a former member of PMI’s Academic Member Advisory Group through 2011. Dr. Williams has worked in both the public and private sector, beginning as a Lecturer in Operational Research at the University of Strathclyde, while completing his PhD research. As a life-long Management Science/Operational Researcher, his specific research interests lie in modeling project behavior. His research into this area is internationally renowned within the practitioner and academic communities.
Project Management Journal® Editor Recognition
Prof. Christophe N. Bredillet, PhD, D.Sc, director of Project Management Academy, Queensland University of Technology, Australia, for his ongoing service to the Project Management Journal®. Dr. Bredillet has 25 years of experience in Strategy, Programme & Project Management in Bank, Sport goods, and IS/IT. For the past 17 years, he has been the Dean, Director of Postgraduate Programmes & Studies, and Professor of Strategic Management & Programme/Project Management at Lille School of Management (ESC Lille). In addition to his service to the Project Management Journal, Dr. Bredillet was PMI MAG Research Member and co-lead of two research & standards development projects for PMI (Project Managers Competences and Organizational Project Management Maturity Model).
PMI’s 2012 Research and Education Conference also welcomes the Project Management Programs at the University of Quebec at Montreal to its esteemed Global Accreditation Center for Project Management Education Programs (GAC). The GAC is a specialized body that accredits bachelor’s, postgraduate and doctorate programs in project management. GAC accreditation publicly confirms that a project management program meets comprehensive quality standards and can prepare students for success in project management careers.
